Valtavech:
[History]
[Government]
[Biology/Noology]
"Few discoveries are more irritating than those which expose the pedigree of ideas." - Lord Acton
The Valtavech Republic is a large, prosperous civilization that unites hundreds of systems of different post-human races and ideologies. It is a federation composed of seven member nations, or prefects, which maintain a degree of autonomy while abiding by the central authority of the federal government. The seat of the republic lies in the Valtave system, which is about 30 light years from Sol, 18 light years above the galactic plane and slightly spinward. In this inconspicuous system several gas giants orbit the star in the habitable zone, and thus many of their moons are favorable to life. Tenatus is the third planet from the star, and its largest moon, Valtave Prime, is the Valtavian home planet and seat of the interstellar Republic.
Valtavians are a complex technological society that long ago attained cybernetic and biological immortality. Valtavians have undergone significant genetic tampering over the millennia to prolong their lifespans and increase their mental powers. Most elder Valtavians, instead of dying, eventually upload themselves into the vast computer networks of the metaverse. These disembodied spirits, called Immortals, form the bulk of the Valtavian population. The oldest and most powerful have vastened themselves into great godlike super-intelligences.
Valtave was one of the more successful colonies of the Diaspora era. The Valtavians developed an extensive industry in their system and over the centuries they launched several major expeditions of their own into neighboring systems. One of these expeditions established the Denasti polis in the Ghudali system. Here the scientists of Denasti discovered the ancient artifact which would shape future history and create an interstellar empire. Through probing the artifact's capabilities, Valtavian scientists discovered the Quantum Trich and Warp Manifold theory, the scientific breakthrough that led to the first FTL communication devices and displacement drives. With this technology the Valtavians expanded into dozens, and eventually hundreds of systems, forcing other colonies into their empire by economic power, and occasionally, military force.
The Valtavech were not the only culture to discover the true nature of the Manifold and break the light speed barrier. The Alephians arose around the same time, and claim to ultimately descend from the Denasti themselves. It is believed that some Denasti pioneers escaped the system and brought their new science and technology to a sympathetic industrial power, although historians are unsure of the exact location. And due to their nomadic nature, it is difficult to trace Alephian origins. Irregardless, the Alephians grew and prospered far from Valtave. Eventually the two expanding powers collided, which resulted in the War of the Soverigns, the fall of the empire, the birth of the Valtavech Republic, and the Valtavech-Alephian War.
The Republic's economy is loosely regulated, and dominated by vast mega-corporations that are intimately connected to the local politics of each prefect. These mega-corporations control the vital mining and shipyard industries which maintain and grow the Valtavech's mercantile and naval fleets. The Alephians now play an important economic role as allies. Their very capable navigators keep the Valtavech government informed about important events on the frontier, such as the Ixtek advance. The huge roaming Alephian worldships fulfill an important trade role, moving large volumes of materials across the Republic's space.
